When closing the lid the ~TMX483-6856 suspend didn't seem to work (i.e. it wouldn't come back from suspend.)  To make the functionality better, click on the battery and select Power Settings
and choose "Do Nothing" "When Lid is Closed".  When the lid is closed it will actually lock the notebook which is useful behaviour. 

After the basic install and update is done one can press
@@~Fn-F7@@
at the login screen to get the touchpad to work. (i.e. hold down Fn and hit F7).  This is the shortcut key for disabling/enabling the touchpad.  Once this is done left and right click work but the scrollbar on the right of the touchpad does not work.  Nor does the middle click (paste) on the clickpad work.  Finally one has to hit the quick key after every reboot.

The module (i.e. a dynamically loaded library) that is involved with the touchpad is "acer-wmi".  Suggestions on the web say that if you disable this module (i.e. make it unusable) this will fix the problem of the touchpad not defaulting to on.  Specifically blacklist the module by editing the file
@@/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf@@
and add the line
@@blacklist acer-wmi@@
at the end of the file.  This needs to be done as root so open a terminal and type
@@su@@
(followed by your password) and then do
@@gedit /etc/modprobe/blacklist.conf@@
and then add the line and save the file.
If you now reboot, the touchpad will work by default however only the left-click will work.  Furthermore one cannot click on a window and drag it.  The scroll bar on the right side of the tablet will now work however.  Hitting ~Fn-F7 still works to activate and deactivate the touchpad but note that the Acer touchpad graphic of the state change no longer appears when this happens.

At this stage one needs to fix the click and drag problem and fix the middle and right click.  Essentially this can be done by enabling the Synaptics Touchpad and then mapping the clickpad button region correctly.  I've written a script called fix-clickpad.sh which does this.  It hardcodes the device configured in the script as 12.  You should confirm this is correct by running the command 
@@xinput@@
and checking that the line
ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad
has the association "id=12".  If it does, nothing needs to be done, otherwise edit and change the DEVICE=
line accordingly in the script to the id reported by xinput before installing it.

To install the script grab it from [[here|fix-clickpad.sh]] and edit it if necessary.  Ensure that it is executable by running the command
@@chmod a+x fix-clickpad.sh@@
Next place a copy of the file in a sensible location like /usr/local/bin .  You will need to be root to do so:

(You can test that the script will fix the problem by now running it from a terminal.)
To make the script automatically run, go under the menu

Add an entry with a name like "Fix Clickpad" and for the command enter

/usr/local/bin/fix-clickpad.sh
The fix should now take effect with every boot.  If the clickpad ever ceases to work one can always run the script manually to restore the proper behaviour.

As an aside the ASUS ~K55A-DB71-CA also has the Elantech touchpad with the same problems.  There is no need to blacklist any modules (i.e. acer-wmi) in this case.  Simply download the fix-clickpad.sh script and install it as above.  However before you do so, change the DEVICE= line to 11 from 12.  (Confirm this is the correct device by running xinput as discussed above.)  As a further aside the ASUS ~K55A-DB71-CA is a little tricky to install Linux on due to the secure boot features which prevent successful install from DVD.  I found I needed to make an installation USB stick with the install iso image and then had to select to UEFI boot off it.  This allowed the live-booted image the permission to install the OS so it would be bootable.

The Acer ~TravelMate ~TMX483-6856 is an inexpensive thin notebook with the following specs:
Intel Core i3-2377M (1.5GHz, 3MB L3 cache)

14" screen
4GB ~DDR3 memory
500 GB Hard Drive
It comes with a brushed metal finish, external HDMI, two USB ports, and SD slot, etc.
For an OS it is distributed with Linpus Linux, which is just a stub Linux OS, presumably so that Acer can abide by rules required by Microsoft that all systems must be distributed with an OS.  Anyway Linpus Linux, only boots into a terminal (no GUI) so this needs to be replaced with a proper Linux.  The notebook has a conventional relatively limited notebook BIOS.  Usefully it has no UEFI secure boot stuff.  The latter can be a pain for Linux if the UEFI does not allow you to turn off secure boot.  No such issues with this notebook.

This document details the installation of Linux Mint 13 (64 bit) with the Cinammon Desktop.  Since the notebook is not touchscreen having a more conventional desktop was desirable.  This OS is builting on Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) so the following install notes likely are relevant to that install as well.  Newer versions of Linux may not have the clickpad issues reported here, however at the time of my install this was the Long Term Support (LTS) version which I wanted to keep maintenance to a minimum.

One can install from a DVD of the operating system (downloaded from the Linux Mint site).  First thing required to do is to go into the BIOS by pressing the appropriate button at boot (F2 ?) and then changing the boot order on the appropriate page to boot from the DVD first.  (There may also have been an option to turn on a boot screen choice at boot which would allow boot device selection which would accomplish the same thing.)

The DVD boots into a live Linux environment.  The clickpad/touchpad does not work, however, so plug in an external USB mouse for the install and click on the icon to do the install and follow the questions.  I chose to partition the drive myself with an 8 GB (8000 MB) swap partition, a 100 GB ext4 / partition and a 400 GB ext4 /home partition.  (Keeping /home separate from the rest makes upgrading easier if you want to install Linux from scratch again.)  For most it is likely easier just to select to install the OS to the entire drive (replacing Linpus).  Incidentally the original drive had two partitions - a partition for Linpus Linux and a large (empty) vfat partition.  There is nothing (I believe) worth saving on the drive.  After rebooting select Administration->Update Manager and update the installation.
